As
a new editor of an online publication, you do not inherit an
office with furniture but an archive of past issues and an
email address clogged with correspondence from writers and
those who think they can write.
Since becoming Editor of Sentinel
Literary Quarterly, I have had to go through hundreds of
emails. What is only disheartening is the lack of polish and
commitment sometimes. You can see the story is there but the
literary execution is poor and as much as I may like the
idea of the story or poem in most cases I end up declining
the majority of submissions.
The mission of our publication is to
celebrate works of ‘international and contemporary’
relevance. The choices I made for this issue are
deliberately eclectic and the scope is broad. It is not
assembled with any particular logic in mind, the subjects
range from Shakespeare’s adaptation in South Africa to
childhood memories of growing up in Israel during the
partition years to reflections of writing in English in
Cameroon.
We welcome contributors for our next issue scheduled for
January 2011.
