I have been sleeping now for seven years. But look!
The iceberg cracks, the levee breaks, the volcano erupts
and the angry lava spreads like hot mud towards the valley
of the mean villages you call your minds. O ye
breathing corpses, ye scented cunts, cadaverous entities,
I am the actor cursing the snow in Ulysee’s Gaze.

 - (excerpt from 'Rejection Slips' by Esiaba Irobi)

UCHE NDUKA

Next Door

(For Esiaba Irobi)

like pageant

like cheerfulness

and wantonness

                         every kind of way

                         of overdoing it

                         pleases us

enticements of utterance

everything but arrival

                         perplexity devouring

                         our retinue

no interlude,no vestige of a fringe

                                 **

to this sacrifice

you bring mirth and pigment

to this shadow

you bring a scythe

a bristling hulk

                   is what you owe gravity
