TOYIN ADEWALE-GABRIEL
Profile of the poet by Nnorom Azuonye

Adewale-Gabriel obtained an MA in Literature in English from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria and has been one of the finest ambassadors of modern African writing in fiction and poetry since the early 1990s. She has read her work to audiences in Nigeria, South Africa, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Italy, The Netherlands, Luxemburg and The United States of America and these writings have been known to sparkle in their earnestness driven by a suitable flourish and drama of colourful images and stunning pun without subjugation of their topicality.

A former advertising copywriter whose resume includes several campaigns for Nigerian media giants notably; Oglivy, Benson and Mather, and STB-McCann, Adewale-Gabriel is a Fellow of the Akademie Schloss Solitude and has been Writer in Residence at the Villa Waldberta, Munich and The Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators, Visby,  Sweden and presently works as the Program Assistant in the Media , Arts and Culture Program in the Ford Foundation Lagos Field office.

Ms Adewale-Gabriel founded the Women Writers of Nigeria in 1991, and is the current Chairperson of the Women Writers Committee of PEN Nigeria. She was the editor of the ANA Review -- official journal of the Association of Nigerian Authors from 1998-1999 and has served on the National  Executive Board of the Association of Nigerian Authors.

Naked Testimonies won an honourable mention in the ANA poetry awards. She was also a winner in the Liberty Merchant Bank short story awards in 1997, and was conferred with a Distinguished Creative Writer of Excellence Award by the Awo Varsity Literary and English Studies Society.
