THE IMPORTANCE OF PAPER

if you are a poet
you should always have paper and pen
else you might find yourself writing
on napkins, toilet paper, styrofoam plates
the tab of a panti-liner
sometimes you may need the aid
of lipstick, nail polish, an eyelash wand

so you see the necessity
of always having writing implements handy?
a poet once claimed he was on
a beach and wrote a poem on a log
he had to carry home

this poem, oddly, was written
on the inside of my hand with permanent marker
last week I wrote one on the skin
of a peach, absently forgot…and ate it.
