Sentinel Literature Festival Poetry Competition 2010

 

About the competition

This competition forms part of the Sentinel Literature Festival 2010 which will take place at the Pearson Lecture Theatre, University College London, between October 28th and 31st, 2010. Winners of this competition will be invited to read at the festival on the last day - The Awards and Recognitions Day, 31st October 2010.

 

Competition Details


Subject: Previously unpublished poems in English Language on any subject may be entered. [
i.e. poems must not have been posted on blog, website or publicly accessible online group. Poems posted on members-only groups for the purpose of workshop as part of the creative process are not deemed to have been previously-published.]
Length: Maximum 40 lines per poem
Entry Fees: £5.00 (1 poem), £10 (2 Poems), £13 (3 poems) or £20.00 for 5 poems. Poets may enter as many poems as they wish.
First Prize: £250.00
Second Prize: £130.00
Third Prize: £70.00
First Publication: The winning 3 poems and 7 Highly Commended Poems will receive first publication in the Sentinel Literature Festival Anthology  to be published in October 2010.
Entries Deadline: 20th August, 2010.
Results: Results will be announced on the 30th of September, 2010 on this website. This will be followed by a presentation of cheques to winners and readings of their work from the festival anthology on October 31st. If any of the winners cannot attend, perhaps due to distance (if the winner does not live in the UK), somebody will read his or her poem.
Judge: ROGER ELKIN - the multi-prize winning poet, former editor of Envoi and author of No Laughing Matter, Rites of Passing and Blood Brothers.

POSTAL ENTRIES

 

  • Poems must be in English Language and typed.

  • Author's name and address or any other identifying mark MUST NOT appear on any of your poetry pages.

  • PRINT your Name, Postal Address, E-mail Address and if you wish, Telephone number on a plain sheet of paper and place the paper in a sealed envelope.

  • Write "SLF Poetry 2010" followed by the Title(s) of your poem(s) on the back of the envelope.

  • Make cheques or Postal Orders (in GB£ only) payable to        SENTINEL POETRY MOVEMENT.

ONLINE ENTRIES*

International/Online entrants may enter by e-mail and pay entry fees by Paypal. To enter by this method please follow these steps:

 

  • Select the option that matches your entry preference from the paypal drop-down button below and make the applicable payment.

  • After making your payment, you will be given a Transaction ID or Receipt Number by Paypal. Make a note of the Transaction ID.

  • Submit your poems and a cover note with your Name, Postal Address, Optional Telephone Number and Titles of your poems to sentinelpoetry@gmail.com as a Word or rtf attachment. In the subject line, type SLF Poetry 2010 Followed by your Transaction ID.

You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of poems within 48 hours.

Terms and Conditions

 

1. You may enter as many poems as you wish with the appropriate entry fees.

2. The decision of the judge is final, and no communication will be entered into.

3. If on the advice of the judge, the quality of entries is too low to produce worthy prize winners, or any other legitimate reason beyond our control arises which may affect a fair completion or conduct of the competition, we reserve the right to cancel the competition and refund all entry fees immediately by the same method we have received payment.

4. If you would like an acknowledgement of postal entries, please enclose an SAE marked "acknowledgement".

5. The Judge's Report will be read at the Sentinel Literature Festival on the 31st of October and published on this site on the 1st of November. if you would like to receive the Judges' Report in the post, please enclose an SAE marked "Judges' Report".

6* Online entries must be received by midnight on the 20th of August, 2010

7. The winning poets will receive their cheques at the Festival on the 31st of October. If a winner cannot attend, and notifies us early his/her cheque will be sent by post before the festival presentation day, or by Paypal if preferred.

ROGER ELKIN is an English poet who has won over 100 prizes and awards including the Lake Aske Memorial Award (1982 & 1987), Douglas Gibson Memorial Award (1986), Sylvia Plath Award for Poems about Women (1986), Howard Sergeant Memorial Award for Services to Poetry (1987), Hugh MacDiarmid Trophy (2003) and First Prize in the Diversity House Excel for Charity Poetry Competition (2009). Co-editor (with JCR Green) of Prospice, he was editor of Envoi from 1991 - 2006, and organised the Leek International Poetry Competition from 1982 - 1992). His published poetry collections include Pricking Out (1988), Points of Reference (1996), Home Ground (2002), Blood Brothers: New and Selected Poems (2006), and Dog's Eye View (2009).
